Weight a Minute

18 09 2009

What time is it? “Analogous Friday” time! In case this is your first exposure to this slice of amazing, on Fridays, I pick a video I found throughout the week, post it on here, and come up with some elaborate analogy for how it can apply to us in the world of marketing, social media, and/or business in general. You can check out last week’s here. I present to you a MAJOR workout fail:

Let me first go ahead and say that this guy deserved something like this the second he decided to film himself working out. So, when this guy learned how NOT to go about working out, what can YOU learn from this unfortunate video? Glad you asked!

Know Your Limits

Apparently, macho man here thought he could handle what appears to be 70 pounds (tops), but obviously couldn’t. He was trying to bite off more than he could chew so that he could prove something to his…well…camcorder. Sometimes, business tend to try to move a little too fast or take on business that they’re simply not ready for. Know what you’re limits are and push those limits, but don’t take it too far.

Never Wear Bandanas While Working Out

No analogy here. Just facts.

Perform Regular Checks

A lot of times the best way to stop a problem is to find the problem, before it becomes a problem, and the only way to do this is to perform checks on a regular basis. In this video, it looks like the cable may have snapped, which he (maybe) could have found if he checked out his workout equipment. With a business, it’s important to constantly introspectively look at your business, find weaknesses or areas for improvement, and take action on these.

Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

If this guy couldn’t laugh at himself, he probably would have deleted this video before he even went to the hospital. It’s important to be able to laugh at yourself when you do something embarrassing. Life’s a heck of a lot more fun that way :)

Miss last week’s Analogous Friday? See what you can learn about marketing from this pee wee football team!

Don’t Let Your Ambition Paralyze You

16 09 2009

I was really struggling last night when trying to think of what to write about and I decided that I tend to try too hard to come up with really big and original ideas that may make people stop and say “Wow.”

Sometimes we focus too much on changing the world. The greatest people throughout history didn’t change the world on a weekly basis. It was all of the little steps that they took throughout their lives which built up to something bigger.

This desire to come up with earth shattering ideas can paralyze us, preventing us from taking the smaller steps to greatness.

Business can be brought to a standstill while trying to come up with the next breakthrough in their industry.

Changing the world  is a great goal to have, but you can’t let this cause you to overlook the smaller areas in which you can make an impact.

Whatchya think?
